Environment education

2025-02-25
AS climate change gains momentum and social injustices increase, it is unavoidable to reform our education system to include eco-social justice education, a revolutionary approach that synthesises sustainable environmental management with social equity.

Currently, textbooks largely ignore changing realities. They promote outdated narratives, fail to contextualise Pakistan`s socio-environmental challenges, and miss the opportunity to instil a sense of responsibility and activism in our youth.

Eco-social justice education can bridge this gap. Lessons on climate justice, sustainable development and equity can connect the students to local realities with global challenges.

Examples from countries like Finland and Costa Rica, where such curricula have been successfully implemented, show that eco-social justice education leads to environmentally conscious and socially aware generations. Pakistan can adapt this model to its local setting.

Eco-social justice education can change schools into centres for change, becoming an investment in Pakistan`s future.

The government, in collaboration with civil society and climate experts, must give utmost importance to the inclusion of eco-socialjustice education in the curriculum.

Policymakers must ensure the development of textbooks and teacher training programmes that reflect these themes.
