Youhanabad car accident accused bail extended

LAHORE: An additional district and sessions judge on Tuesday extended bail of a woman involved in knocking down three protesters with her car apparently in self-defence during Youhanabad protests.

Mariam Safdar did not appear before the court for medical reasons. Her counsel submitted a medical certificate before the court and sought exemption for her from personal appearance on hearings. The judge allowed the application.

Complainant Hameed Masih appeared before the court and sought time to engage a counsel.

AD&SJ Mian Shahzad Raza adjourned the case till April 4 and directed the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case to appearin person before the court along with complete record.

Earlier, the judge had granted pre-arrest bail to the petitioner against bail bond of Rs100,000. The Nishter Colony police had registered a case on the complaint of Hameed Masih under sections 322, 337/G of PPC.

The complainant alleged that on March 16, they were protesting on Ferozepur Roadto condemn twin suicide blasts on churches of Youhanabad when the woman rashly driving a car ran over the protesters and as a result his son Amir and other protester Danish Shahbaz died.

DIRECTIVE TO POLICE: The Lahore High Court directed police on Tuesday to take action in accordance with law against a close relative of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on an application seeking a fraud case against him.

Shahnaz Latif filed a petition saying her brother Yousaf Aziz, a close relative of Sharif brothers, submitted a fake affidavit on her behalf in a case about distribution of Ittefag Group`s assets. She said her brother misled the court by counterfeiting her signatures on the affidavit.

The petitioner said that a sessions court directed the police to lodge a fraud case against Yousaf Aziz but police were reluctant to comply with the order. She asked thecourttoordertheLahore police chief to register a case against the respondent.

Justice Zafarullah Khagwani disposed of the petition and directed the police to take up the application of the petitioner and decide it in accordance with law.
