LAHORE: Cholera has taken a toll of 80 lives out of a total of 677 cases reported since its outbreak on April 4, according to latest reports received by the West Punjab Government. The epidemic, which till a few days back was confined to the Walton group of Refugee camps, has now made its way into the Lahore Corporation area ... and certain villages around Lahore.

Two days ago the figure stood at 239 cases with 61 deaths. Elaborate measures are being adopted by the West Punjab Public Health Department to control the epidemic which is believed to have been imported from the East Punjab... .

Besides the usual anti-cholera measures of mass inoculation of the refugees in the camps and the imposition of quarantine restrictions on their access from and entry into the camps, for the first time in the subcontinent a DDT anti-virus aerial spray will be shortly [used] all over the affected areas and the adjoining localities. A special plane is being commissioned to diffuse the DDT ...

over the Walton and Bowli camps, Model Town and the Shahdara areas.
