Nuclear reactor to be tested in China before its launch, Pakistan assured

KARACHI: While opting for a nuclear reactor for energy generation project, K1 and K2, Pal(istan has been assured by China that the reactor will not be operated until it is first tried and tested in China, said former foreign secretary and ambassador Najmuddin Shaikh while chairing a seminar on Tuesday.

The programme was organised by Rabita Forum International to discuss Pakistan`s `Peaceful Nuclear Technology and the Politics of Nuclear Suppliers Group`.

Academics and experts from various uni-versities and related fields gave speeches and shared their views at the event.

In his comments, specifically about the recurring debate on nuclear power plants in Karachi, and the apprehension of certain groups regarding their proximity to residential areas, Mr Shaikh said that the design of the reactor is totally new. `In a meeting with their Pakistani counterparts, China has assured us that the reactors will not operate in Pakistan until they are tried and tested in China,` he added.
