PESHAWAR/MALAKAND: An anti-terrorism court here on Wednesday sent PTI leader and former MPA Arbab Jahandad to prison on 14-day judicial remand.
Jahandad, who was arrested in Murree by the Punjab police two days ago, is the first member of the dissolved provincial assembly from Peshawar to be arrested in connection with the May 9 violent protests.
The local police produced him amid strict security measures and informed the court that he was involved in violent protests, which led to the vandalisation of public property and a toll plaza of the PeshawarIslamabad Motorway.
They said that several other PTI leaders and workers were booked by the Chamkani police for the attack.
Also, a Malakand court has granted two-day physical remand of former provincial minister Shakeel Khan and five other PTI activists held on the charges of vandalising a Swat Motorway toll plaza, an arson attack, and theft during the May 9 violence.
They were produced before district and sessions judge Mohammad Iqbal Khan, who ordered their handover to the levies force on remand.
A total of 33 suspects have so far been arrested in the case.
The highway authorities had lodged an FIR at the levies post in the area against the attack putting the value of damage at around Rs65 million.
Mr Shakeel told reporters on the court`s premises that he was under no pressure to leave the PTI.
He said that he and other activists would continue to stand with party leader Imran Khan. `Those quitting PTI were not ideological workers,` he said.
The PTI leader said that he condemned arson attacks and other acts of violence and was not involved in them.
He demanded an impartial judicial inquiry into the toll plaza attack.
