KHYBER: Unidentified gunmen killed a schoolteacher in Bara tehsil here on Wednesday, the police said.

They said Sakhi Afridi, a teacher in government high school in Thoot Dhand area of Bar Qambarkhel, was on his way home after duty when gunmen riding a motorcycle sprayed him with bullets, killing him on the spot.

The police said they immediately cordoned off the area, but the gunmen managed to escape. They shifted the body to a local hospital for autopsy. Later, the body was handed over to the family.

Sources said though the motive behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately, the slain teacher was also targeted by unknown people in the past. They said the deceased was famous for his extreme religious beliefs and had survived an earlier attack in 2004.

The police, however, said they were investigating the case.

Meanwhile, caretaker minister for relief and rehabilitation Taj Mohammad Afridi donated 10 tents to four government schools in Bara on Wednesday.

Sources said the minister had visited the schools last week, where a windstorm had uprooted a number of tents on May 15.

They said six tents were given to government high school, Alamgudar, two to government high school, Baz Garha, and one each to government primary schools in Khuna Ziyarath and Amin Khan Kalay.

Sources in the education department said as many as 50,000 girls and boys were still studying in 52 tent schools in different localities of Bara.

They said the caretaker minister Taj Mohammad, who also belongs to Khyber, had promised providing more tents to the schools, as tents provided by Sarhad Rural Support Programme eight years ago had worn out.
