KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party on Friday distanced itself from Hussain Haqqani and said that Pakistan`s former ambassador to the United States had nothing to do with the PPP as his views did not reflect its policies.
The move came a few days after the prime minister`s adviser on foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz, blamed a former ambassador to the US of `lobbying against his own country and creating hurdles for the government`.In a brief statement, the PPP denied any association with Mr Haqqani even though the former ambassador had served as a key man in its foreign policy framework when it was in power between 2008 and 2013.
The party also did not agree with Mr Haqqani`s views which were covered by media recently, the statement said.
`The party has nothing to do with the views expressed by Mr Hussain Haqqani,` it said and added: `His [Hussain Haqqani`s] views are entirely his own and it would not be correct to attribute them to the party.
Mr Haqqani, however, did not seemto be bothered about the PPP move. In a brief statement, he expressed satisfaction over his political career and about his `contribution` to Pakistani politics.
`Political parties cannot be expected to own scholarly research or analysis just as scholarly worl< cannot be constrained by party policies,` he said. `I joined Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in 1993, stood by her and Asif Ali Zardari in tough times. That political contribution to Pakistan politics is sufficient for me. I am glad that I can now focus on research and writing without having to worry about ties to PPP or its policies.
