TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of brick kiln workers with their families took out a rally for the acceptance of their demands here on Friday.
The rally that started from Gojra Road municipal octroi post was led by Punjab Bhatta Mazdoor Union Secretary General Muhammad Shabbir and local leaders of the body.
The participants carrying red flags and banners inscribed with their demands chanted slogans against labour welfare department officials for allegedly siding with kiln owners instead of redressing their complaints. At Shahbaz Chowk the rally participants were addressed by their leaders, including Ms Sajida Parveen, Ashfaq, Nawaband Nasir Iqbal who demanded the district administration to implement the Punjab government`s notification issuedon July 1, 2021 under which kiln owners were bound to pay Rs1,250 per 1,000 bricks as wages to the workers.
The workers regretted that instead of paying them the officially fixed wages, the kiln owners were paying them just Rs700 for making 1,000 bricks, which was unjust.
They also demanded establishment of social security department office in the city, besides issuance of social security cards to all kiln workers and enforcement of the Bonded Labour Act 1992.
They warned that if their demands were not accepted they would be forced to stage a sit-in outside the DC of fice.
