2013-07-25
PESHAWAR, July 24: Governor Shaukatullah Khan has said that transparent working of nation building departments in Federally Administered Tribal Areas is essential to make the governance system result-oriented. He said that the authorities concerned should regularly visit all the ongoing projects to ensure their timely completion.
`Difficulties do exist, but each and every official, the seniors in particular, need to move efficiently and ensure their presence at each development project and get detailed report on its progress and sustainability,` he said.
The governor said this while presiding over a meeting to review the reports prepared by heads of various departments of the Fata Secretariat following monthly visits of projects, here at Governor`s House on Wednesday.
He said that everyone would have to work hard to make a visible change possible in agriculture, irrigation, fisheries, and sports. The governor desired that the available potential should be utilisedto the optimum level.
Mr Khan said that all the 171 fisheries farms should be made functional during the current financial year and efforts should also be initiated to regulate the system, protect farming and make them fully beneficial for the respective population.
The fact that only 69 of 171 projects are in working condition puts a big responsibility on the respective department and there is a need to further concentrate on the ongoing arrangements to make the measures in this connection fully productive, he said.
Same is the case in respect of agriculture and forestry sectors, he said and added that soil erosion was the most severe problem in the Fata which could be contained to a great extent by focusing on promotion of forests and agriculture.
There is also the need not only to streamline the existing arrangements but also to encourage direct involvement of the respective communities in development of their respective areas and pro-mote forestry in particular, he said.
The governor remarked that availability of almost two million plants at nurseries across Fata at present was a big opportunity to promote forests. He said that the department should focus on public involvement and provide saplings on nominal prices to respective people to promote forests.
He noted with satisfaction that fish farming was in progress in all the small dams of Fata. The bee farming, the governor said, was another such sector which, if promoted to the desired level, could contribute significantly towards promotion of economic activities.
Referring to inspection reports prepared by the heads of various departments, the governor said that from next monthly review meeting onward each document should be supported by documentary evidences.
Meanwhile, the heads of departments briefed the governor about the conclusions they had drawn from their visits to various projects. -APP
