Maligning institutions

2017-08-25
FORMER Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by a unanimous Supreme Court five-member bench decision. He went to Lahore via GT Road holding rallies en route.

He addressed public meetings where he and his followers criticised the verdict and asked frequently why he had been sent home and tried to make the apex court controversial.

In these rallies many a minister cast aspersions on state institutions. Now the same party has filed an appeal before the same Supreme Court that they had been denouncing for weeks.

A citizen has a right to criticise a verdict, disagree with the findings and appealagainst it, but no right to malign an institution. Individuals do not matter, institutions do. The habit of besmirching the judiciary must be checked, otherwise, the consequences will be disastrous.
