Three killed on road LANDI KOTAL, Oct 24: Three persons, including a woman, were killed and seven others were injured in a road accident in Jamrud on Thursday.

Khasadar force officials said that the accident between two cabs occurred due to over-speeding which caused the killing on the spot of Khalid Khan, his wife Raheema Bibi and their teenaged son, Khiyali Gul.

Seven other passengers identified as Said Shah, Wasim Akram, Shafeega, Bakhtiar, Meena,Tufail and Mariyam Bibi were injured and shifted to local hospital. Both the vehicles were badly damaged.-Correspondent Fumigation drive MANSEHRA, Oct 24: The municipal committee Mansehra on Thursday launched fumigation drive against dengue in four urban union councils.

A meeting held prior to launch of the drive decided to evolve a comprehensive strategy to make the city clean.

It decided to cover every nook and corner of the union councils as more and more suspected cases were being taken to hospitals in the district.

Assistant commissioner Dr Qasim Ali Khan chaired the meeting. Chief municipal officer Danish Iqbal, head of sanitation Mohammad Tariq and other staff were in attendance.

Dr Ali directed MC staff to remove garbage and ensure sprinkling of water at city roads and its suburbs to settle dust which caused pollution and diseases among citizens.

Mr Iqbal, who is leading the fumigation drive, said two rounds of the fumigation had already been completed in the district.-Correspondent Protecting natural environment TIMERGARA, Oct 24: The University of Malakand and the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding to take joint initiatives to protect natural environment.

UoP vice chancellor Professor Johar Ali and EP officials signed the agreement during a function at the varsity, according to a press release issued here.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ali said clean environment was a sacred gift of God and it should be adequately preserved.

He said the varsity would take initiatives in collaboration with the EPA to preserve natural environment.

He said mass awareness in this regard would be jointly raised so general public should also be involved in the process of environmental protection.

Meanwhile, the district sessions judge on Thursday appointed Syed Riaz Ahmad as chairman of district`s public and safety and police complaint commission for two years.

The appointment was made under Police Order, 2002, said a release.-Correspondent Peace in Muharram KOHAT, Oct 24: The local administration on Thursday told a jirga of Shia and Sunni elders to keep peace in the region and not to invite controversial ulema to Kohat.

Kohat commissioner Jalaluddin and MNA Shehryar Afridi were addressing the jirga held at Kohat police club prior to the start of Muharram.

It was also attended by Javed Ibraheem Paracha of Ahle Sunnat, DIG Dr Ishtiaq Marwat, DPO Saleem Marwat and others.

Mr Jalaluddin said there would be no compromise on peace and that anti social elements would be met with an iron hand. `Targeted actions have already been launched against the outlaws,` he said.

MNA Shehryar Afridi said Kohat was a sensitive district and asked Shia and Sunni elders not to invite fiery ulema to the district.

He asked the ulema to teach the lessons of peace, unity, brotherhood and tolerance to people to ensure tranquility in the region.-Correspondent Medical camp concludes GHALANAI, Oct 24: A five day free medical camp concluded here on Thursday where patients were told to adopt preventive measures to protect themselves from various diseases.

The camp arranged by Mohmand Rifles with the help of political administration was held at Pindiali, Safi, Ambar and Prang Ghar tehsils where specialist doctors examined the patients.

During the camp 538 patients were given free treatment.

Similarly 1,129 patients, including children, were examined and given free medicines.

During the camp children were vaccinated against polio drops.

They lady doctors also examined women patients.

Laboratory tests were also conducted.

Major Yasin of Mohmand Rifles appreciated the political administration officials, local people, doctors and the paramedical staff for extending help in this regard.Correspondent Debate competition LAKKI MARWAT, Oct 24: The education department (female) on Thursday held a national songs and debate competition among the students of girls` middle, high and higher secondary schools in the district.

The event was held at Government Girls` Centennial Model High School, Lakki under the district school tournament festival. DEO Sabira Parveen was the chief guest on the occasion.

Students of GGHS No 1, Lakki, and GGMS Nar Sahibdad, Maidadkhel, grabbed first position in national song competition.

Salma Bibi of GGMS Mela Shahabkhel, Shaifa Anam of GGHS No 1, Lakki, and Hala of GGHS Dalokhel secured first position in debate competition (Urdu and English category), respectivley.

Similarly, students of GGMS Mela Shahabkhel won the final of badminton by defeating the GGMS Michenkhel.

Later, DEO Sabira Parveen distributed prizes among the students who exhibited outstanding performance in sports competitions.-Correspondent Farewell function LAKKI MARWAT, Oct 24: The employees of district education office on Thursday organised a farewell function for outgoing district education officer Haji Taj Ali in Government Primary School No 1, Tajazai here.

Mr Taj Ali, who has been posted as principal GHS Tehkal, Peshawar, received warm welcome when he reached the venue.

On the occasion he said his subordinates extended full cooperation toward s him to promote education and resolve the problems of teachers in the district.

He said teachers were cooperative and hard working and they should be commended for performing their professional obligations with honesty.

The newly appointed DEO Nazir Khan praised his predecessor and said that the farewell function clearly indicated that he (Taj Ali) maintained impartiality and merit in official maters.

He said that concerted efforts would be launched to improve learning environment in state run schools besides ensuring attendance of teachers.-Correspondent
