FALLEN REPUTATION: In 1973, my marriage proposal was accepted without any delay. I learnt later that the girl was already engaged, but the family`s nod in the affirmative was just because I was an employee of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national flag carrier. Finding it rather unethical, I withdrew the proposal. The incident is a stark reminder of the heightened reputation the organisation once enjoyed. With the airline going down the drain and struggling to pay salaries to its employees, I wonder what kind of challenges the current unmarried employees must be facing in getting their marriage proposals accepted.
Asiffah Karachi PROTESTS IN UNIVERSITIES: Quite a few university students join different political groups active on campuses around the country, and organise protests. This creates troubles fortherestofthe students as the academic process gets affected.
Students should think twice before getting involved in political protests as doing so affects their own studies as well as of the others around them. The government should ban political activities on campuses to ensure uninterrupted academic proceedings.
Adnan Dawood Kech REDUNDANT EDUCATION: Our educational institutions barely enable their students tolive enlightenedlives.
Although earning is essential for respectable human survival, it is enlightenment that makes individuals improve their approach to life overall.
Since education has been narrowed down to mere earning, society remains unchangedeven afterhavingthousands of graduates coming out of universities eachyear.Itis critically important to give due weightage to the sociological function of education in the curriculum if the leaders are seriously interested ini changing our society for the better through education.
