MOSCOW: The Soviet Union yesterday [Feb 24] again denounced what it described as the rebirth of Nazism in West Germany and said its position on West Berlin has not changed. This was made clear at a Press conference given by the Foreign Ministry Press Chief, Mr Leonid Zamyatin, on the theme of the alleged rebirth of Nazism and militarism in West German.
On the question of Nazism, a long Foreign Ministry statement was read out that commented on both the Soviet Note of Dec 8, 1967, to West Germany, Britain, and the US and the replies to the Note from Bonn, London and Washington.
Mr Zamyatin said that the `fine policies` claimed by Bonn not only have not weakened the neo-Nazi and militarist forces but have even enabled them to consolidate. He added that the US was intentionally favouring `the growth of revanchist and militarist tendencies in Federal Germany`.
On the replies to the Soviet Note which was critical of the danger presented by Neo-Nazi growth, Mr Zamyatin rejected Bonn`s objections that Moscow was interfering in West German international affairs and was trying to blacken West Germany in the eyes of public opinion.
`How can it be interference,` Mr Zamyatin asked, `When it is a question of stopping the rebirth of Nazism and protecting the people of Europe from Fascist danger?` The Soviet Union has always drawn a precise line between those who cherish Nazi and revanchist ideas and majority of the citizens of West Germany who hold other views.
