NAB & Nawaz Sharif

2018-02-26
THIS refers to the letter `NAB response` (Feb 18) on your editorial `NAB`s pressure (Feb 16). I am not too impressed with the NAB`s self-praise in view of the fact that the institution had solutions like pleabargain which allowed fraudsters to go scot-free by returning a small fraction of the looted wealth.

However, I feel NAB`s stand regarding the Sharif family is most appropriate. We must remember it had even allowed them to go abroad earlier, but now that the case is in final stages and their conviction seems certain, letting them slip would be foolish.

If the Sharifs had returned earlier, it could be more owing to their assessment of the situation, meaning their expectation of neutralising the NAB and superior judiciary one way or the other. This view may have been strengthened by the non-sentencing of Nehal Hashmi for months.

However, having failed in neutralising NAB and the superior judiciary, and afraid of almost certain conviction, they are unlikely to return soon and may also have been advised so by their counsel.
