Senate slams Indian attempt to frame Pakistan

By Iftikhar A. Khan 2025-04-26
ISLAMABAD: In a rare display of unity, the Senate on Friday unanimously adopted a resolution, pledging a firm and decisive response to any misadventure by India, following escalating tensions after the Pahalgam attack and New Delhi`s attempts to link Pakistan to the incident.

The upper house condemned India`s `unlawful and unilateral` decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, describing the move as a blatant violation and tantamount to an act of war.

The resolution stressed that Pakistan remains fully capable and prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any aggression, including `water terrorism` or military provocation citing Pakistan`s robust response to Indian actions in February 2019 as evidence of its readiness.

Senators categorically rejected `frivolous and baseless` attempts to link Pakistan to the recent Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). The House decried what it called an orchestrated campaign to malign Pakistan, accusing New Delhi of exploiting terrorism narratives for political gain.

The Senate reiterated Pakistan`s commitment to peace but made it clear it would not allow any violation of the country`s sovereignty, security or national interests. The resolution also called for India to be held accountable for its involvement in acts of terrorism and targeted assassinations on the soil of other countries, including Pakistan.

The House also reaffirmed Pakistan`s moral, political and diplomatic support for and commitment to the Kashmiri people`s just struggle for the realisation of their right to self-determination.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who moved the resolution, informed the House that Pakistan had closed its airspace to Indian-owned and Indianoperated airlines with immediate effect.

He said all trade with India, including transit to and from third countries through Pakistan, had also been sus-pended. These measures, Mr Dar said, were in addition to reciprocal actions taken after the Pahalgam incident and followed decisions made by the National Security Committee a day ago.

He said the Foreign Office had briefed the diplomats of 26 countries, including the P5, about the current situation. He said diplomats of other countries would also be briefed. He reaffirmed that Pakistan`s armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any Indian misadventure. He stressed that Pakistan was a nuclear and missile power, and if India tried to cast an evil eye, `it will get a titfor-tat response`.

Leader of the Opposition Shibli Faraz said India had always sought to harm Pakistan`s interests and had been involved in acts of terrorism inside Pakistan, citing the arrest of Kulbhushan Jadhav as evidence.

He said the Senate`s unanimous adoption of the resolution sent a clear message of unity to enemies at a critical time, criticising India for making baseless allegations without investigation or evidence.

He emphasised that the occurrence of the Pahalgam incident in the presence of 750,000 Indian troops in the occupied Kashmir raises a question mark on their capability.

`From day one, they have not accepted Pakistan as a reality and have gone to every limit to harm us be it through terrorist activities inside our country or opposing and undermining Pakistan`s interests at global forums,` he noted.

India had always been hostile to Pakistan, Senator Faraz said, accusing Modi of following the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Security failure or false-flag operation PPP Parliamentary Leader Senator Sherry Rehman condemned New Delhi`s `dangerous trajectory of misinformation, war-mongering and water aggression`.

`Either this was a colossal failure of security or a false-flag operation timed with the visit of a US vice president just like what happened in the Chittisinghpura massacre in 2000 during President Clinton`s visit,` she said.
