KARACHI: Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif on Thursday said the Turbat naval air station would boost Pakistan Navy`s defence capabilities and enhance its control over the Arabian Sea, especially its strategic reach westwards.
Speaking as chief guest at the ceremony marking the start of operations of the air station at PNS Siddig, Mr Asif said the facility would provide a vital link for air transportation and as a base for naval opera-tions besides providing support to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project.
He said the dual use of the air station would accrue dividends both visa-vis maritime defence and the country`s economic sector.
With the realisation of intraregional connectivity, Balochistan would act as a gateway to Pakistan, he added.
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah also attended the ceremony, according to a PN press release.
Mr Asif lauded the Pakistan Navy for its operational pursuits and contribution to the socio-economic uplift of Balochistan by providing quality education, healthcare facilities and employment opportunities to the people of the area.
In his welcome address, Commander Coast Rear Admiral Abdul Aleem highlighted theair station`s strategic and economic importance.
The development of the naval air station, he pointed out, would provide the Pakistan Navy with the required depth, flexibility and reach to counter emerging challenges of deterring terrorism at sea, curbing piracy and carrying out maritime security operations.
A new runway was built in accordance with modern standards and, therefore, it would be able to handle heavier aircraft, not only for the navy but for civilian airlines as well. As the runway would be used by the private sector as well, it would boost economic activities in the region, he added.
On the occasion, Pakistan Navy`s P3C aircraft, Z9EC and Sea King helicopters participated in an impressive fly past.
The ceremony was attended by a large number of navy, military and civilian dignitaries.-APP
