NAWABSHAH: Most Sindh towns remained shuttered on Sunday in response to Jeay Sindh Rahbar Committee`s call for strike against deaths of nationalist parties` workers in action against protesters in Moro on May 20, and subsequent police conduct with regard to their bodies.
Shaheed Benazirabad and Naushahro Feroze districts remained completely shut. All main bazaars remained shuttered throughout the day in the two districts and their adjoining towns of Qazi Ahmed, Sakrand, Daur, Jam Sahab, Bandhi, Moro, Kandiaro, Halani, Padidan and Mehrabpur.
In Thatta, life was paralyzed by a complete strike, which saw all bazaars and shopping centers and filling stations shuttered across the city.
In Badin, a complete shutter-down strike was observed in the city and all towns of the district in protest against police failure to register murder case of nationalist activists, who died in police action in Moro on May 20.
Later in the day, scores of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahazactivists led by Arbab Irshad Nuhrio, Ameer Bukhsh Soomro and others marched through the city chanting slogans against police and demanding action against the officers involved in killing the party workers.
The party leaders said in their speeches before workers that two workers Zahid and Irfan Laghari were killed when police opened fire to disperse the protesters.
In Hyderabad`s Q asimabad taluka, Tando Mohammad Khan, Hala and Matiari towns, complete strike was observed and businesses remained shuttered. No strike was observed in Hyderabad.
In Mirpurkhas, people did not respond to the call for strike while police had tightened security with deployment of personnel at main chowks and entry and exit points to avert any untoward incident.
All markets remained open and business activities continued as usual throughout the day. Strike was observed in rural areas and towns of the district.
Three-day mourning announced Jeay Sindh Mahaz-Riaz chairman Riaz Chandio demanded the government immediately register murdercase of Irfan Leghari against Sindh chief minister and home minister as they were involved in the killing of protesters in Moro.
He said at a press conference here on Sunday that he strongly condemned murder of Irfan Leghari, forceful custody of his body by police and his burial by police personnel instead to handing over the body to his heirs.
He announced observing three-day mourning in Sindh on this incident and said that people had held ghaibana namaz janaza (funeral in absentia) of the activist outside mosques and press clubs on Monday.
He urged police authorities to arrest the killers of the activists immediately and award them exemplary punishment after registering an FIR.
He deplored that the government had oppressed innocent masses as over 200 persons were arrested by police in Moro and other towns and 70 people were detained by police in Moro alone.
He demanded the government immediately release all illegally detained workers and supporters and withdraw all false FIRs lodged against them. Otherwise, a protest campaign would be launched against the government in the province, he said.
