PM likely to visit Gilgit today

GILGIT: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to visit Gilgit today (Friday) to attend the chief minister`s oath-taking ceremony.

During the visit, his first to Gilgit-Baltistan since PML-N won the June 8 GBLA elections by claiming 16 of the total of 24 Legislative Assembly seats, the prime minister is to announce a development package for the mountainous region as well.

PML-N candidate Hafeezur Rehman was elected the new chief minister unopposed on Thursday as no one filed nomination papers for the slot against him.

FidaMohammadNashad and Jafarullah have already been elected unopposedthespeakeranddeputy speaker of the houserespectively due to the withdrawal of candidates by opposition parties.

The newly-elected 33 members of the GilgitBaltistan Legislative Assembly had taken oath on Wednesday.

Also on Thursday, the assembly held a session, where outgoing Speaker Wazir Baig administered the oath of their respective offices to his successor, Fida Mohammad Nashad, and deputy speaker Jafarullah.

Meanwhile, inspector general of Gilgit-Baltistan police Zafar Iqbal Awan has directed the local police to ensure foolproof security arrangements for the prime minister`s visit.

Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman will take oath as the chief minister on June 26 during a special that will be attended by PM and other high-ups.
