Court orders jobs for the disabled in three months

2015-06-26
LAHORE: Rejecting an agreement reached between the Punjab government and visually impaired people, the Lahore High Court on Thursday directed the government to fill all vacancies reserved for people with disabilities within three months.

During hearing of a petition seeking implementation of three per cent quota for disabled persons, a law officer said the agreement gave a five-month time to the government to provide jobs for such people within five months. He said 1,909 vacancies in different departments had already been advertised for disabled persons while 943 more posts would be advertised soon.

Petitioner’s counsel Azhar Siddique argued that federal and provincial governments were legally bound to provide jobs to the disabled persons under the allocated quota. He said the agreement between the government and the disabled persons had no legal value. Getting jobs was lawful right of the disabled persons, he added.

The court directed the government to fill all vacancies within three months and submit a compliance report by July 16. — Staff Reporter
