Indus erodes dyke

By Our Correspondent 2015-06-26
LAYYAH: A protective dyke constructed by the residents was eroded by the River Indus on Thursday at Bhakhri Ahmad Khan Union Council, inundating crops on hundreds of acres.

The Indus is continuously eroding lands in Union Council Bhakhri Ahmad Khan and Bait Wasawa Shumali. Locals had constructed a small dyke at Baet Dabali to save their lands from erosion.

On Thursday, the river swept away the dyke as a result water flowed into cotton, sugarcane and green chili crops.

Owing to the flooding, all road links with Baet Khanwala were closed and residents had to shift to safer places.

Residents namely Zafar Iqbal Gazar, Fiaz Husain Panwar, Arif Nutkani and Kareem Bukhsh told this correspondent that although officials visited the area, they did not take steps for the protection of the inhabitants.
