BERTRAND Russell qualifies university education for refining intellect and grooming character. A university is the highest pedestal of learning. It provides a social, political and economic platform to speak and write freely.
Thus it is sad to acl(nowledge the deterioration prevailing allaround in university education in Pakistan. The most damaging factor is the growth of extremism in university students` activities.
The extremism of one`s beliefs should not be thrust upon others. This is what university education teaches. That we have gone astray is beyond doubt and our defective education system is to blame.A few decades ago students would seldom intrude into others` domain. There was mutual love and respect between teachers and students. The students` unions also functioned effectively under the vigilant control of veteran teachers.
There are now few amenities and almost no sports and games activities. The result is that the students have no alternative but to indulge in violence to demonstrate their loyalty to faith and creed.
Our universities must have academic, as well as, extracurricular and sports activities.
