Waste management

2019-10-26
T HER E is a growing problem of waste management in Karachi, Pakistan`s biggest city with a population of 20 million.

Statistics indicate that on a daily basis about 12,000 tonnes of solid waste is generated in Karachi alone, of which 40 per cent can be found on the streets. The improper management of solid waste is causinginfecdous diseases and environment al pollution.

The KMC and DMCs are responsible for the garbage collection, disposal, staff budgeting, machinery and vehicles. They put the blame of their low performance on lack of funds and capacity building in the past. If garbage is not removed regularly from our homes and surroundings in our city then they will become dirty.

The rotting garbage will become a breedinggroundfordisease causing organisms such as cockroaches, flies and mosquitoes. If heaps of garbage keeps lying for a long time it causes the growth of the disease causing bacteria, it also causes soil degradation or soil pollution eventually, animals cows eat the garbage and die due to diseases which create another nuisance, it will also cause a great threat to environment and then in the end the city of light will turn into the city of garbage.
