Railway track blast Remand of suspected bombers extended

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court on Wednesday extended physical remand of five suspects in a case pertaining to bomb blast on a railway track.

A girl was killed and at least 23 people were injured when several coaches of the Lahore-bound Shalimar Express derailed due to the impact of the blast on the outskirts of Karachi near Ghagar Phatak on Feb 4, according to the prosecution.

Police said Abdul Khalig, Ghulam Ali, Lal Bux, Abdul Rasheed and Arbelo were arrested and some electric devices with other substance seized from their possession on Feb 11.

The following day they were remanded in police custody. On Wednesday, the investigating officer pro-duced the suspects before the court seeking extension in their physical remand on the ground that the custody was required for interrogations to be conducted by a joint investigation team.

Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso of the ATC-I granted extension in physical remand of suspects till March 10.

A case was registered under Section 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code, 3/4 of Explosive Substance Act and 126 of Railways Act, 1890, read with Section 7 of Anti-terrorism Act, 1997 at the Steel Town police station.

Mausoleum case A sessions court, mean-while, granted interim prearrest bail to a security supervisor of the Quaid-iAzam mausoleum in a case pertaining to renting out rooms of the mausoleum.

The security official, Qamar Javed Janjua, through his lawyer moved a pre-arrest bail application.

After a preliminary hearing, district and sessions judge (east) Arshad Noor Khan granted interim prearrest bail till March 8 against the surety bond of Rs40,000 and issued a notice to the prosecutor for the next hearing.

According to the prosecution, a case was registered on a complaint of the resident engineer of the Quaid-iAzam Mausoleum Management Board against some employees for renting out rooms, adjacent to the grave of the Quaid-i-Azam, to couples.

The case was registeredunder Sections 8 (no person shall do any act or behave in any manner which is or tends to be derogatory to the sanctity and dignity of the Mazar) and 10 (whoever contravenes any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or both) of the Quaid-i-Azam`s Mazar (Protection & Maintenance) Ordinance 1971 at the Brigade police station.

Earlier on Tuesday, a magistrate had also garneted bail to three detained employees of the mausoleum.

Arrest warrant out An anti-corruption court on Wednesday ordered to register a direct complaint against an assistant director of the Malir Development Authority (MDA) on corrup-tion charges and issued bailable warrant for his arrest.

A resident of Shah Latif Town moved an application against assistant director Sikandar for allegedly misplacing the original file of his plot and instituting fake documents by misusing his powers.

The applicant contended that he approached the MDA, the police station concerned and the anti-corruption establishment against the officer in question for his alleged involvement in corrupt practices, but to no avail.

The judge of special provincial anti-corruption court, Karachi, Gulshan Ara Chandio ordered to register a direct complaint and issued bailable warrant for arrest of the suspect.

The court sent the complaint to anti-corruption establishment director for inquiry.
