PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Department has blacklisted an arms supply firm for its involvement in a major scam concerning supply of substandard weapons, ammunition and other gadgets to the police force.
A police spokesman said on Wednesday that like every year the police department had carried out procurement of weapons, ammunition and other gadgets for operational policing in 2008-09.
Through the tender, he said, a firm M/S Majeed and Sons had got the contract. Later, allegations of embezzlement in the procurement of different items started surfacing in media and thus the National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, conducted investigation into the matter.
The major supplier during procurement in 2008-09, he said, was Arshad Majeed, the owner of M/S Majeed and Sons. He was arrested by NAB and during investigation he not only admitted to his involvement in malpractices, but also entered into an agreement for voluntary return of the embezzled amount.
The spokesman said that the supplier had inflicted colossal loss on the national exchequer and tarnished the image of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police. Keeping all this in view the police department under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Procurement Regulation Act blacklisted the M/S Majeed and Sons, he said. -Bureau Report
