SWABI: Leaders of Awami National Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl and Pakistan People`s Party on Tuesday insisted the alliance of their parties would defeat the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insafled coalition parties in the upcoming local body elections in Swabi.
During a meeting at ANP leader Rehmanullah`s hujra here, they discussed the election strategy, including candidates and campaign, and decided that alliance would name candidates in the district after the three parties developed consensus.
Among the participants were ANP leader Rehmanullah, JUI-F leader Maulana Fazal Ali, former ANP MPA Ameer Rehman, PPP district president Javed Khan Ingilabi, former PPP provincial president of youth wing Gohar Inqilabi and the office-bearers of the three parties in district and four tehsils.
Maulana Ali told Dawn that there would be 15-member committee in each district and four tehsils to decide about matters on elections.
He said things about candidates were in early stage, so nothing could be said about them with certainty.
A participant said the participants thoroughly discussed the strategy to contest the ruling parties` alliance, which was likely to comprise Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Jamaat-i-Islami and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan.
The position of Qaumi Watan Party is yet not known.
The participant said they considered ways and means to woo voters, especially when they were in opposition in the province.
He said the elections would be crucial for both the ruling parties and opposition groups as both of them claimed the district was their stronghold.
An ANP leader said compared to other political groups, the coming polls would be very critical for his party as it had suffered massive defeat during the last general elections in the district, which had been its stronghold from the country`s independence.
Meanwhile, local private schools on Tuesday announced results of their annual examinations promoting successful students to their next classes. High-achievers were given medals, certificates and prizes during colourful ceremonies.
