ECP launches voters` education campaign

PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday launched voters` education and awareness campaign to ensure maximum increase in the turnout in the forthcoming local government elections.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the campaign at Peshawar Press Club here, the ECP Peshawar district officer Haroon Shinwari said that the commission had approved a package to support all those extending cooperation in display of ban-ners, posters and distribution of handbills among the communities.

Highlighting the importance of vote, he said that in the past people avoided getting the computerised national identity cards, but with the passage of time when it was made mandatory for bank accounts, travelling abroad and other necessary documents the people started obtaining the document.

Mr Shinwari said that the campaign would continue for one month to ensure that maximum of people got themselves enlisted in the voters` lists.

`In the near future vote number may become necessary for getting vi-sas, financial matters, and those having no vote entry will face problems,` he said and added that if educated people took interest in voting process then the entire system might get changed.Khyber Union of Journalists president, who is member of the voters` education committee, suggested that political parties should take interest in helping people get CNICs and ensuring their entry in the voters`lists in their respective areas.
