PPP seeks joint session on NAP

By Our Staff Reporter 2019-03-27
ISLAMABAD: PPP has demanded cancellation of parliamentary leaders` meeting convened by the government for a briefing on National Action Plan (NAP) and instead has sought joint sitting of the parliament on NAP.

PPP stalwart and former Senate chairman Mian Raza Rabbani in a statement on Tuesday observed that the meeting scheduled to take place on Thursday will serve no purpose and it would be appropriate that it be cancelled.

`A joint sitting of parliament should be called immediately to brief all the members on NAP and other related national security issues, he said.

Rabbani said it was unfortunate that the government was trying to create an elite group within parliament i.e. the parliamentary leaders and ministers.

`It is the constitutional right of every member to be kept informed on matters of national security and to contribute in the formation of a policy,` he stressed.

He noted that the office of a parliamentary leader had been created to oversee and regulate parliamentary business for and on behalf of his parliamentary group.

Rabbani said Pakistan`s parliamentary history had seen extensive joint sittings of Parliament taking place in camera on matters of national security.

`It is, therefore, demanded that a joint sitting of Parliament be summoned immediately to tal(e up question of the implementation of the NAP,` he said.
