Medics stress timely diagnosis for curing epilepsy

LAHORE: An awareness walk and seminar on epilepsy were arranged here at the Lahore General Hospital that were hosted by Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences (PINS) and Department of Neurology.
PINS head Prof Khalid Mahmood, Prof Ahsan Noman, Prof Asif Bashir, Medical Superintendent Dr Mahmood Salahuddin, Dr Mohsin Zaheer, Dr Shahid Mukhtar and other doctors, nurses and medical students were present on the occasion, according to a press release issued by the hospital on Tuesday.
Prof Khalid Mahmood said that with the passage of time it has been proved that epilepsy was 100 per cent curable however proper diagnosisin time was important. Unfortunately, Pakistan had the highest percentage of this disease and main reasons for its causes were infection, tuberculosis, typhoid and high fever.
He further said that out of the total 60 million patients of epilepsy in the world, 2.2 million belonged to Pakistan and out of these only 50,000 opted for treatment. It was the need of the hour that apart from doctors, the media, civil society, ulema and social organisations play their role in creating awareness about epilepsy.
Prof Noman and Prof Bashir said that in children suffering from epilepsy, the growing portion of the brain is in danger of being damagedor injured so it is the duty of a doctor to determine whether a fit was caused by epilepsy or not and proper treatment be ensured through operation or medication.
Dr Zaheer, Dr Mul(htar and other speal(ers said that if a patient received fits then he/she must be turned to a side while lying down. If the duration of the fits extended three minutes then a patient must be immediately shifted to a hospital.
Meanwhile, doctors, nurses and medical students participated in an awareness walk at the neurology department where they were carrying placards inscribed with symptoms, treatment and suggestions for saving people from epilepsy.or injured so it is the duty of a doctor to determine whether a fit was caused by epilepsy or not and proper treatment be ensured through operation or medication.
