RAWALPINDI: The Punjab Highway Patrol police have been given the authority to take legal action on traffic violations that fall under their purview by issuing tickets. In this way all vehicles impounded under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance (MVO) and other traffic laws at Punjab Highway Patrol posts will be kept there and released as per the law.

A notification has already been issued by the inspector general of police Punjab.

Deputy Inspector General of Police PHP Dr Mohammad Athar Waheed has intimated the notification to the senior police officials concerned.

The aim of authorising the PHP to issue tickets was to check violations in all those areas that fall under the PHP purview.The authorisation was issued by the government of Punjab Police Department to the IGP, divisional police chiefs, deputy inspector general of police PHP, accountant general Punjab and relevant authorities.

Under the directive, all officers of Punjab Highway Patrol from the rank of ASI to onward have been authorised to take legal action, including issuing of challan tickets, against traffic violations during patrolling duty in their area of jurisdiction under Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965 and all other traffic laws with immediate effect.

Although the traffic police are typically not present in PHP`s regions of jurisdiction, traffic violations do occur there. Mohammad Asghar
