Jirga demands measures to curb targeted killings in Bannu

LAKKI MARWAT: The residents and elders of Nurar area have demanded concrete measures to stop targeted killings in Bannu district.

The demand came at a jirga held in the areaonSunday.

It was convened in the backdrop of the murder of a payer leader, Maulana Irfanullah, a few days ago.

A delegation of Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz Khatm-i-Nabuwwat led by Mufti Azmatullah Sadi also participated in the jirga to express solidarity with the people of Nurar.

An elder said they would form a lashkar to assist the police and other law enforcement agencies in eliminating miscreants and maintain peace in the area. He said residents would also hold a demonstration on Friday against targeted killings.

Other participants said lawlessness had returned to the district as incidents of targeted killing had become a routine.

They said miscreants were on a killing spree as they targeted government employees in the first phase and now elders and citizens were on their hit list.

`After government employees and law enforcement personnel, the miscreants have now started targeting religious scholars,` an elder said.

The elders said they would not be a silent spectator anymore and would play an effective role along with the police and other law enforcement agencies to curb targeted killings and eliminate those involved in such heinous crimes.

OUTLAW ARRESTED: The police arrested an outlaw in injured condition after an exchange of fire in Shahbazkhel area of Lakki Marwat on Saturday night.

A party of Shahbazkhel police station reached Malakhel village on information about the presence of a proclaimed offender, identified as Ishrat, there.

The outlaw opened fire on the cops when he noticed them around his hideout, an official said, adding the police returned the fire.

The official said when firing stopped the law enforcers launched a search in the locality and arrested the wanted man in injured condition.

He said the suspect was wanted in murder, attempted murder, extortion and other cases. `The cops seized a hand grenade, arms and ammunition from him and shifted him to a hospital,` he added.
