Dirty streets

THE uncollected garbage in residential areas is an issue that has never been given due attention. The sight and smell of rotting waste have become common in urban centres across the country, particularly in Karachi. Garbage dumps attract stray animals, mosquitoes and flies, while open drains, which are often clogged, cause sewage overflow onto the streets.Such unsanitary conditions pose a serious health hazard, especially to children and the elderly who are more vulnerable to a range of diseases, like dengue, malaria and skin infections. Despite repeated complaints, no effective measure has been taken by the relevant authorities. People are forced to live in unsafe conditions, with no idea of when things might improve, if at all.
While the government and municipal departments are responsible for maintaining cleanliness, the people themselves have a role to play. There is a clear need for ensuring better civic sense among the masses. Besides, fines should be imposed for illegal dumping, and garbage collection systems should be improved.
