2024-06-27
MANSEHRA: Experts at a climate change conference here on Wednesday urged the United Nations to take action to control rising global temperatures.

They said developed countries should collaborate to address the issue.

At the `Urgency of Climate Change Education Conference,` environmentalists and educationists from universities in the provincepresentedresearch papers, stressing the need for more efforts to bring the rising temperatures down.

Vice-Chancellor of the Hazara University Dr Mohsin Nawaz told the inaugural session of the one-day moot that Pakistan had low carbon emissions but was severely impacted by climate change.

`We [Pakistan] are among countries with meagre carbon emissions, but are worst hit by climate changes taking place around the world,` he said.

Dr Mohsin said the Third World countries, including Pakistan, were worst affected by climate change.

He said as glaciers were melting fast due to the rising temperatures, people were vulnerable.

`The holding of such conferences are crucial in such a scenario,` he said.

The VC said flash floods caused by abrupt rains affected mountainous parts of the country.

The conference was organised by the university in collaboration with national and international nongovernmental organisations and research institutions.

Experts Dr Wajihah Rizwan, Dr Mahrukh, Dr Ambreen, Zainab Waseem and Dr Asif Javed spoke on the occasion.

Dr Ambreen said it was high time that scientists and environmentalists came forward to sensitise people to abrupt changes in the weather cycle and its impacts on people.

She said glaciers were rapidly melting due to climate change.

GUTTED: Four multistorey houses were gutted by a big fire in the Kanshian area of Balakot tehsil here on Wednesday.

People were shifted from the houses to safety by their neighbours before controlling the fire. Fire Squad of Rescue 1122 didn`t reach the area due to the mountainous terrain.

A house`s owner, Sardar Waliur Rehman, said the fire destroyed household goods and cash in the houses, which were mostly built with wooden planks.
