US, Argentina offer aid, investment to KP govt

PESHAWAR: Ambassador of Argentina in Islamabad, US consul general and USAID mission have offered investment and aid by their countries in various sectors, including communication and telecommunication, to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

The offer was made during their meetings with Chief Minister Pervez Khattak at KP House in Islamabad the other day, according to a handout issued here in Peshawar on Saturday.

The diplomats lauded the hosting of IDPs in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying that there was no match in the history of welcoming the migrants in such a large number by the government and people of a province. On this, they paid tribute to the government and people of KP.

`We direly need help of the friendly coun-tries and welfare agencies at the national and international level,` the chief minister said during his meetings with the diplomats. KP Senior Minister for Health Shahram Khan Tarakai, education minister Mohammad Atif Khan, CM`s adviser on communication and works Akbar Ayub and administrative secretaries and authorities of P&D, health, education, IT, C&W, irrigation and other departments were also present during the meetings.

Ambassador of Argentina Rodolfo Martin Saravia while introducing his embassy officials and Argentina telecom company ICondor chairman Oubay Atassi offered investment in various sectors, including telecom.

Mr Khattak welcomed the offer and said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was rich with natural resources and minerals. He said that the investors and companies of Argentine could help in KP`s development by investing in mines, mineral, tourism and energy sectors. He issued on the spot orders to the authorities concerned for best use of the services and offers of ICondor. He said his government besides connecting all cities and villages of his province with Wi-fi network, wanted telecom and 3G technology in promoting e-health and e-learn-ing.

In response to the aid offers of the US Consul General Gabriel Escobar, USAID Deputy Mission Director Gregory Huger and other mission officials, the chief minister requested for help in construction ofruralroads and mega projects like Swat Expressway and Peshawar Mass Transit, to which they showed their readiness and sought meetings with him next week on projects related to rural roads.

The US officials lauded steps of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for elimination of corruption, reforming the departments and ensuring transparentuse of theforeign aid under Strategic Development Strategy Partnership (SPDF).

They said that it would greatly help in enhancing local and foreign investment and economic activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

They said that USAID had been working on 400 megawatt Allai Khwar and Dubair Khwar power stations, 85 megawatt Kurram Tangi Dam, irrigation schemes of Gomal Zam, Munda and Amandara command areas, construction of Swat University campus as well as improvement of transmission lines of electricity in the province.
