PESHAWAR: Awami National Party has shown reservations over the process of nomination of members of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), terming it a deal between two political parties.
ANP spokesperson Zahid Khan said in a press statement here on Tuesday that the undemocratic process wherein his party was not consulted would lead to yet another weak ECP. He said that ANP endorsed the decision of Senator Dawood Khan Achakzai of not using his right to vote in the parliamentary committee as the party had reservations over the process of nominations.
He said that the previous ECP was also not independent and could not ensure transparency in elections. `This one will be the same,` he said, adding two political parties through a deal decided to set up yet another weak ECP that would not be able to hold transparent and fair elections.
Mr Khan said that the ANP senator was neither consulted nor taken into confidence about nominations of ECP members. That`s why the senator did not use his vote in the parliamentary committee, he added. The ANP leader said that consultation with all the political parties was very important for setting up a fair and free ECP in the country. The procedure was not followed, he added.-Bureau Report
