THE monsoon season has always been celebrated in literature as a time of joy, healing and cherished memories. This once adored weather has now become a time of fear and tragedy. Within days, close to 300 people have already lost their lives due to rain-related incidents across the country.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), meant to ensure public safety and prepare for such events, appears to have limited its role to reporting casualties. It releases updates on how many people have died, instead of actively preventing such losses.
The monsoon, once a symbol of smiles, joy, togetherness and snacks and, has now turned into a season of mourning. People stay indoors out of fear. Rains have been turned into a source of trauma, especially forthose grievingthe loss ofloved ones.
