Mayor says he will not `escape` after tenure ends

KARACHI: Mayor Wasim Akhtar on Wednesday expressed displeasure over the deplorable condition of Karachi after rains saying the city had no infrastructure to face the rains.

`Rainwater would have not entered homes of the people had the provincial government carried out drains cleanliness on time. Karachiites faced miseries due to incompetence of the Sindh government. Authorities concerned should pay seriousness towards issues of Karachi,` he said.

The mayor expressed these views after inaugurating the Queens Garden in UC-22 North Nazimabad.

District Central chairman Rehan Hashmi, parks committee chairman Khurram Farhan and others were also present on the occasion.

He said that the beautiful park was established on an area of 5.5 acres, adding that there were piles of garbage and of f al but now the park was a gif t for the citizens.

Mr Akhtar said that uplift works initiated in the past were near completion and many development schemes had also been included in the current fiscal year`s budget for welfare of the people.

`I will be amongst the citizens even after tenure of my mayorship ends as I am not going to escape. Everybody knows that those who had escaped in the past were brought back forcibly,` he added.

Mr Akhtar said that he also kept visiting dif ferent areas of city during the recent rains but didn`t make a photo session of it.

He was of the view that he wanted to inaugurate the park way earlier but could not do so due to pandemic and heavy rains. He appealed to the citizens to preserve the park.

The mayor said that they served with sincerity throughout four years. `The people of Karachi will once again vote for the Kite and Muttahida Qaumi MovementPakistan and the next mayor will also belong to the party, he hoped.-Staf f Reporter
