Holocaust in E. Punjab

2022-08-27
REPORTS received in the capital of Pakistan show that the continued holocaust in the East Punjab has not been as yet brought under control by the local Government or the Government of the Indian Dominion. It is difficult to assess accurately the loss of life sustained since the trouble began on Aug 8 or 9.

According to responsible non-of ficial sources the death toll is already fairly high in the fourfigure category, but refugees speak of at least `50,000 dead`. Independent official casualty lists are said to total about 5,000, but this is admitted to be incomplete. Amritsar city is comparatively quiet, because there are no Muslims left in it, but organised attacks on the few remaining Muslim pockets in the interior of the district are still continuing. Perozepore, Hoshiarpur, Jullundur, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana and Ambala are still hotbeds of massacre and other brutalities. ... Grave reports of bestial treatment and outrages on women have also been confirmed. These are of an indescribable nature. The general impression is that the Boundary Force has proved ineffective, despite reinforcements, and that neither the East Punjab Government nor the India Dominion Government have yet put the whole weight of their authority and resources into preventive and punitive measures.
