WOLFSBURG: New Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany praised his side`s mentality after they came from behind to beat VfL Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga opener on Sunday.

An 82nd-minute goal by Serge Gnabry secured the record German champions a 3-2 win at Wolfsburg and handed Kompany, who replaced Thomas Tuchel after their disappointing third-place finish last season, a winning start in the Bundesliga.

Jamal Musiala put Bayern 1-0 up af ter 19 minutes but Wolfsburg took the lead with two Lovro Majer goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Bayern were nervy, with Ralph Hasenhuettl`s side pouncing on severaldefensive errors.

A Kane header forced Wolfsburg`s Jakub Kaminski into an own goal after 65 minutes and the England captain set up Bayern`s third, laying on a pass for Gnabry`s late strike.

`I enjoyed it, it was my first Bundesliga game as a coach,` Kompany, the former Burnley manager, said.

`The first half was dominant, as itshould be. We didn`t concede any chances. The second half wasn`t good at the beginning, we conceded two quick goals. The third point is that our mentality was right at the end, and that`s why we won the game.

`Mistakes happen, the important thing is how the team reacts. That took a while in the second half.

Thomas Muller and Kingsley Coman came in with the right mentality and the tempo came back.

`At the end of the second half, we had a lot of courage to win the game.

It wasn`t perfect, but we`ll keep going.

Joshua Kimmich said Bayern`s reaction was good in the second half.

`It was extremely difficult, the pitch was very dry, so the game stalled at times. Perhaps it wasn`t always presentable. But in the end I`m happy that we won it. The mentality was right,` the German international said.

Bundesliga winners in 2009, Wolfsburg have not beaten Bayern since 2015, a run of 21 matches.`We had a few chances in the second half. We`ve developed nicely over the last few months. We played fantastically in the second half, Hasenhuettl said. `What we can do better is to score the third goal. You can`t defend everything away against Bayern. We threw ourselves into every duel.

In Sunday`s later game, Heidenheim won 2-0 at promoted St Pauli thanks to second-half goals from Paul Wanner and Jan Schoeppner.

After 66 minutes and with St Pauli on the attack, Heidenheim broke, with Wanner finishing a length-ofthe-field effort to open the scoring.
