LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday directed the traffic police to restrict entry of motorcyclists without helmet to all main roads of the city in addition to The Mall.

Earlier, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) retired Capt Liaqat Malik told the court that during the first two days of the crackdown 4,778 motorcyclists were fined for not wearing helmet on The Mall alone among a total of 22,246 offenders in the entire city.

Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi directed the CTO to continue crackdown on the violators of traffic laws without any discrimination and do not sparepolicemen caught without helmet.

The judge further directed the CTO to expand the crackdown to other main thoroughfares of the city, including Jail Road, Ferozepur Road and Canal Road. He asked the ofEcer to restrict the entry of motorcyclists without helmet to Jail Road from next week.

The judge directed the Pemra to run road safety advertisements on television channels.

Previously, the judge had ordered the traffic police to impose a fine of Rs1000 on motorcyclists not wearing helmet.

ACTING CJ: Justice Muhammad Anwarul Haq, senior puisne judge of the Lahore High Court, on Wednesday took oath as acting chief justice.

Justice sardar Muhammad Shamim Ahmad Khan administered the oath to Justice Haq at a ceremony attended by judges, har leadership, law ofñcers and ofñcers of the court.

Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali proceeded abroad on a four-day private visit and in his absence Justice Haq will be the acting chief justice.
