`Land grabbers` chop off widow`s nose, lip

B A H AW A L P U R : Three men allegedly chopped off the nose and upper lip of a widow, besides inflicting other serious injuries to her with a cleaver, at mohallah Shamimanbad in Uch Sharif, about 70km from here, on Sunday night.

According to a district police spokesman, Parveen Bibi (31), a widow and mother of three children, was alone at her house when the suspects, Abdul Waheed and Raees Muhammad Ijaz, along with an unidentified man, barged in.

The suspects allegedly overpowered the widow and chopped off her nose and upper lip, besides inflicting injuries to her face, ear and right hand, with a cleaver, and fled away.

The injured woman was shifted to Uch Sharif Basic Health Unit (BHU) for treatment.

In her complaint, the victim said her late husband, Kashif Hussain, who died about six months ago, owned an acre of agriculturalland and the suspect wanted to grab it.

Uch Sharif police, on the woman`s complaint, registered FIR No.99/25 under sections 324 and 34 of the PPC against suspects. None of them could be arrested yet.

FIRE INCIDENT: At least seven persons suf-fered burns in a fire erupting in a restaurant due to use of illegal compressor in its kitchen in Model Town A area here on Mond ay.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, the injured persons included Ahmed Mukhtar (20), Shehzad (18), Rousho Razaq, Ashar Razag (20), Nadeem (25) and Zakir Gull (25).

The rescuers said that one of the injured, Nadeem, was later shifted to the emergency ward of the Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH), because of his critical condition.

Quoting doctors, they said that Nadeem suffered 90 percentburns.

According to sources, the restaurant owner had illegally installed a compressor to supply gas to several stoves, which resulted in an explosion and fire.

C H E S S TOURNAMENT: As many 15 girls and boys are participated in the first-ever chess tournament that began at Jymkhana Club, Lodhran, on Monday.

Multan Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan inaugurated the event by playing a chess game with Lodhran Deputy Commissioner Dr Lubna Nazir.

The commissioner announced that he will also direct holding of such chess championships at all district headquarters in the division.
