A strange convocation

2025-02-28
ON the official page of the Government College University (GCU) in Lahore, there was an announcement recently about its 23rd convocation.Istarted preparingto attend the convocation, eager to capture and build pleasant memories.

Onthe day,Ireachedthevenue wearing the black gown and cap. On my way to the university, I kept thinking about what should be my greetings when I would come face to face with the chancellor while receiving the degree. I had also requested one of my friends to record a small video when my name would be called and I would go on to the stage. Memories are precious, you know.

Eventually, after a long wait of three hours, the chancellor along with the vice-chancellor (VC) and all the deans and faculty members arrived at the auditorium, and the ceremony commenced.

The VC shared the annual report of the university, and, in return, the chancellor appreciated the efforts of the university and congratulated all the students who had graduated.

From the stage it was announced that all the top performers in all disciplines, whether academic or co-curricular activities, should line up to receive their gold medals and certificates. These students were awarded in due course of time, and then the convocation came to a close. All the guests left their seats and went outside the auditorium. Soon we, the rest of the students, were ordered to leave the auditorium as well.

I was surprised to see what was happening. I left the venue and moved to the department`s office to receive my degree.

A clerk was waiting for the students with their degrees in hand. I received my degree from a clerk, not the chancellor.

There were no videos or pictures to capture the moment. I got my quota of memories, but these were bitter memories.

I really wonder if this is how universities around the world hold their convocations.
