Moot demands judicial probe into Kurram conflict, accountability

Bureau Report 2025-02-28
PESHAWAR: Speakers at a gathering organised by different tribes from Kurram district on Thursday demanded that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government form a judicial commission to investigate the causes of conflict in the restive tribal area and ensure accountability of those responsible.

The Kurram Grand Convention, arranged by the Sunni Educated Council at the Nishtar Hall here, was attended by a large number of tribal elders, students and social activists.

The convention called for the restoration of peace, protection of rights, and rehabilitation in Kurram district, which had reportedover 180 deaths in attacks as well as road closures in the violence that began after an attack on a convoy in October last year.

The charter of demands, presented on the occasion, emphasised that while many issues persisted, some of grave importance must be addressed on a priority basis.

The participants demanded that the Sadda area of LowerKurram should be declared the headquarters of the district, with all relevant administrative offices, including those of education and accounts departments as well as Rescue 1122 headquarters, and the upgradation of hospitals and colleges.

`The local court should be upgraded as a sessions court, read the charter.

The moot also called for the implementation of the 2008 Murree Accord in letter and spirit to ensure lasting peace and justice in Kurram.

It demanded the opening of Gavi and Anzarki border crossings with Afghanistan to promote trade and ease movement for local communities.

The participants called for theprotection of the properties of Ahle Sunnat members in Parachinar, saying those properties areformally restricted by a formerpolitical agentfrom being sold to the Shia community.

On the occasion, Samiullah, one of the organisers, said the convention was held to demand peace, rights, security and rehabilitation in Kurram district.

He said Kurram had been in the spiral of a conflict since 2007.

The organiser said that the issue should be resolved in light of the Murree Accord and other subsequent agreements.

He, however, regretted that despite the peace agreement, the issue was not heading towards resolution , so it was imperative to chalk out such a course of actionthat the entire people couldn`t feel left out.

Abdullah, president of SEC Islamabad chapter, alleged that the media reporting of the Kurram conflict was one-sided.

He said that the government should take indiscriminate action against terrorists.

Mr Abdullah said that if human rights, homes and local traditions were ignored in any settlement, then the law and order situation in the district would further deteriorate.

Other speakers discussed the need for sustainable peace, the protection of human rights, and public welfare in Kurram.

They said that lasting peace required mutual cooperation and reconciliation among all stake-holders.

The speakers also shed light on the challenges faced by the people of Kurram and the importance of collective efforts to resolve them.

A key issue raised during the discussion was the restoration of Bagan Bazaar.

Participants demanded immediate steps to revive economic activities in the region and urged authorities to accelerate the rehabilitation process to provide relief to the local population.

The speakers said that the convention marked a significant step toward long-term stability and development in Kurram, with all participants underscoring the need for similar initiatives in the future.
