Estranged husband injures woman, two constables on court premises

BAHAWALPUR: A woman, two constables, who were escorting her, and a passer-by were shot at and injured by the estranged husband of the woman on court premises in Vehari.

According to police, Rimsha Shehzad had filed a plea for dissolution of marriage from Muhammad Tariq, a resident of Mailsi, and she was staying at Darul Aman in Vehari.

She, escorted by constables Zahoor Hussain and Muhammad Bilal, went to the court to attend the hearing of the case in Mailsi on Saturday.

Tariq who was already present there allegedly opened fire on her while both constables attempted to protect her from firing and suffered wounds but Rimsha had already been hit by bullets. Tariq also suffered injuries and was overpowered by injured constables.

The constables, along with Rimsha, were admitted to District Headquarters Hospital Vehari.

On Sunday, District Police Officer Muhammad Afzal visited the constables in hospital and inquired after their health. He directed the medical superintendent to provide them with special treatment.

Punjab Women Protection Authority chairperson Hina Butt also visited the injured constables and Rimsha in hospital, commended their courage and assured them of government`s help. She also assured Rimsha Shehzadi of help on behalf of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
