Fake degrees: details of clients shared with US embassy

ISLAMABAD: The investigators probing the Axact scandal have shared with the US embassy details of fake degrees allegedly awarded to American citizens.

Sources in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) told Dawn that search and scanning of records seized from the software company`s office and data from its computers had disclosed thatmost of its clients were US citizens.

The details the FIA had gathered from the company`s of fice about the US citizens had been shared with the embassy and the investigators were waiting for a reply, the sources said.

According to the sources, there were rare cases where the company had allegedly sold degrees to Pakistani nationals and it was essential to gather more record and testimony from the foreigners who had paid huge amountsto obtain the certificates.

The sources claimed that the FIA was also seeking help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the case because US-based universities were also involved.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said last week that a decision had been taken to seek legal assistance from the FBI and Interpol for investigation into the alleged sale of fake degrees.
