Man arrested in Rs3.4m Umra scam

MIRPURKHAS: A suspect in a Rs3.4 million Umra scam was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Hyderabad crime circle team after his plea for the confirmation of protective bail was rejected by the Mirpurkhas district and sessions court on Wednesday.

Naved Memon is facing the charge of receiving Rs3.4 million from a group of 33 pilgrims for arranging their travel to Saudi Arabia for performing Umra but he neither arranged for the pilgrimage nor did he refund the money.

A special FIA team raided his travel agency located on Sir Syed Road about 15 days ago and detained its manager but Naved Memon was not found there. The team seized 26 passports, dozens of CNICs, a laptop and records from the agency’s office.

A case was registered on the complaint of Zulfikar Ali, a resident of Mirwah Gorchani town, who was one of the affected pilgrims. Later, Memon obtained protective bail from the Sindh High Court till May 26. He appeared in court for the confirmation of the bail on Wednesday but his plea was rejected and he was arrested by the FIA team.
