Anti-PTI banners in garrison city raise eyebrows

2023-05-28
RAWALPINDI: While posters and banners attacking political opponents are not considered out of the ordinary during election campaigns, the latest such hangings to appear in the garrison city have raised some eyebrows.

Hung in the main squares of Rawalpindi, banners proclaiming PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, as `traitors` were posted on Liaquat Bagh and Kutchery Chowk, just metres from the offices of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) and the district administration.

However, officials professed they were unaware who was behind the banners, or who had declared these prominent places as `walls of shame` for the PTI leaders.

Although no local party leader would comment on record, a senior Rawalpindibased PTI leader, requesting not to be named, told Dawn that af ter the incidents of May 9, many local leaders and prominent workers were in hiding. On the other hand, PML-N workers and supporters brought out a rally from Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation to Liaquat Bagh on Saturday to express solidarity with the armed forces.

The participants chanted slogans in favour of Pakistan Army and against PTI chief Imran Khan, while also throwing their shoes at the posters of PTIleaders. Staff Reporter
