Two awarded capital punishment for killing policeman

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court on Friday awarded capital punishment to two militants in a case pertaining to murder of a police head constable and injuring two others in an armed attack on a police station in 2013.
The detained accused Rehmatullah and Mohammad Jameel, said to be associated with the banned militant outfit Lashkari-Jhangvi, along with their absconding accomplices have been charged with carrying out an armed attack on the Sohrab Goth police station in January 2013.
The ATC-VI judge found them guilty of killing head constable Zulfiqar and injuring constablesGhulam Arshad and Ghulam Nazik.
The judge observed in the order that the prosecution had proved the charges against the arrested accused beyond any shadow of doubt.
Therefore, it awarded capital punishment to both the accused for the murder. Both the convicts were ordered to pay Rs500,000 compensation each to the injured.
According to the prosecution, around 15 to 16 unknown terrorists riding four motorcycles and cars, and equipped with deadly weapons, attacked the police station with an intention to kill the policemen there on the evening of Jan 29, 2013.
Three officials, who were present outside the police station, received bullet wounds from gun-fire by the accused. However, the accused fled from the scene after the police party returned fire in self defence.
Head constable Zulfiqar succumbed to his wounds, while constables Arshad and Nazil( were shifted to a hospital.
Man gets death in murder case The same court, meanwhile, also handed down capital punishment to an accused, Asif Iqbal, in a kidnapping and murder case.
The detained accused has been charged with murder, kidnapping, robbery and terrorism.
Sentencing him to death under Section 7(1)(a) of the ATA 1997, the judge also ordered him to pay Rs100,000 compensation to thelegal heirs of the deceased under Section 544-A of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) or undergo an additional simple imprisonment for six months in case of default.
Awarding him 10 months` rigorous imprisonment for abduction, it further ordered him to pay Rs10,000 fine or face four-month simple imprisonment on default.
Furthermore, the court handed down 10 years` rigorous imprisonment on the charge of robbery, ordering him to pay Rs10,000 or undergo four months` simple imprisonment on default.
However, the case against four absconding suspects Junaid, Faisal, Kashif and Shiraz was kept dormant to be reopened as and when they would be arrested by the police.
