LAHORE: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has been requested to declare residences of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law retired Capt Safdar as sub-jail so they can undergo their sentences and also remove their names from the exit control list (ECL).
Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party made this request through a petition, pleading that a three-time prime minister (Nawaz Sharif) and his family members were not habitual criminals.
Therefore, he stated, residences of the convicted members of the Sharif family should be declared sub-jails, allowing them to undergo their sentences.
Moreover, the lawyer pleaded that the newly-established federal cabinet, in its maiden meeting, decided to put the names of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam and Safdar on the ECL while they were already in jail.
He stated the new government had ignored a fact that both Nawaz and his daughter had voluntarily come returned from London to offer arrest.
He said the decision of the cabinet showed vindictiveness on the part of the new government.
Barrister Khan contended that this important case involved violations fundamental rights of individuals and other constitutional provisions.
