Regional committees to survey state buildings

ISLAMABAD: National History and Literary Heritage Division Minister Shafqat Mehmood on Monday formed regional committees for conducting a survey of the condition of state buildings the report of which will be made public.

The minister took the decision while chairing his first meeting with technical experts where various proposals regarding the utilisation of heritage buildings such as governor houses and state guest houses were discussed.

In his maiden speech, Prime Minister Imran Khan had specifically mentioned the utilising of heritage buildings such as governor houses and state guest houses for public use.

After the premier`s address, a committee was formed under the supervision of federal minister for federal education and professional training, who also holds additional charge as minister national history and literary heritage division.

The first meeting of the committee was held on Monday in the committee room of the Heritage Division with Mr Mehmood in the chair. Heritage buildings are national assets, the minister told the meeting.

`It is vital not only to protect these buildings but also make them accessible to the public, he said, adding that the committee will take the provinces along in the process of utilising state-owned heritage buildings.

Mr Mehmood formed a committee to conduct a survey and submit a report on state buildings and directed heads of the regional committees to submit a progress report in two weeks. Staff Reporter
