NEW DELHI: `There was a temple in ancient days at the site where the Purana Qila is situated. We have every right to it and the Government of India should immediately restore the temple.` This is the theory some local Hindu Mahasabhites have put forward immediately after the discovery of a few images of Hindu deities from the grounds of the Purana Qila on Wednesday [Aug 25]. PWD labourers who were at work dug up five images of Hindu deities in the Purana Qila. The news spread and a crowd of Hindu sadhus gathered.

The police took possession of these images.

The news travelled to the Hindu Mahasabha office, fertile brains got to work and the theory that at the Purana Qila there was a temple in ancient days was evolved.

This theory was given currency in the city and the Hindu Mahasabha is expected officially to move the Government of India for the restoration of the temple. `Are we to lose even the Purana Qila?` remarked a local Muslim on hearing the news.
